Constitution of North Macedonia

National Constitutions of Europe

The Constitution of the Republic of North Macedonia was adopted by Parliament on 17 November 1991 as the country separated from Yugoslavia, describing the state as sovereign, independent, democratic and social with indivisible sovereignty, and designating the Cyrillic script as official for the Macedonian language. Comprising 134 articles, it has received 32 amendments, most significantly in 2001, when the Ohrid Agreement expanded the rights of the country's ethnic Albanian population following that year's armed conflict, and in 2019, when an amendment implementing the 2018 Prespa Agreement with Greece changed the country's constitutional name from the Republic of Macedonia to the Republic of North Macedonia. The document establishes a Constitutional Court as a specialized body safeguarding constitutional and legal compliance outside the ordinary separation of powers.
