The Constitution of the Slovak Republic was passed by the Slovak National Council on 1 September 1992, signed on 3 September 1992 at Bratislava Castle following Slovakia's independence from Czechoslovakia, and took effect on 1 October 1992, with certain provisions delayed to 1 January 1993; September 1 is observed annually as Constitution Day. Its preamble and nine parts of 156 articles cover state symbols, fundamental rights and freedoms, economic provisions, the legislative and executive branches, the judiciary and transitional provisions, drawing formulations from the 1920 Czechoslovak Constitution alongside Western constitutional models. It has been amended repeatedly since adoption, most significantly in September 2025 by an amendment addressing gender recognition and the definition of marriage that the Council of Europe noted could conflict with international law standards.
