Constitution of Nauru

National Constitutions of Asia and Oceania

The Constitution of the Republic of Nauru was adopted on the country's independence, 31 January 1968, and establishes a parliamentary system in which the president is elected indirectly by Parliament rather than by popular vote. That arrangement has contributed to political instability, with frequent votes of no confidence producing numerous changes of president. The constitution comprises eleven parts and six schedules covering fundamental rights, the executive branch, citizenship, emergency powers and transitional provisions.
