Constitution of Kiribati

The Constitution of Kiribati became effective on 12 July 1979, when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom and became the 41st member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It establishes Kiribati as a sovereign and democratic constitutional republic and incorporates a Bill of Rights protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual. The document runs to ten chapters and two schedules and stands as the supreme law of the country; it has been amended three times, in 1995, 2016 and 2018.
