Constitution of Solomon Islands

The Constitution of Solomon Islands was approved on 31 May 1978 and took effect on 7 July 1978, the date of independence from the United Kingdom, establishing a unitary state under constitutional monarchy aligned with the Westminster system, with its preamble declaring that all power belongs to the people and is exercised through the legislature, executive and judiciary. Most sections require a two-thirds parliamentary majority to amend, while certain entrenched provisions require a three-quarters supermajority, and the document remains in force today, having undergone periodic amendments including a 2023 amendment establishing procedures for its own potential repeal and replacement; draft federal constitutions produced in 2009, 2011 and 2018 remain unadopted.
