The Constitution of the Lao People's Democratic Republic was adopted by the Supreme People's Assembly on 14 August 1991, sixteen years after the country's 1975 founding and after a period in which Laos operated without a formal written constitution or published penal and criminal codes. Its preamble and 80 articles establish executive, legislative and judicial structures while naming the Lao People's Revolutionary Party the leading nucleus of political power and incorporating the principle of democratic centralism; it has since been amended three times, in 2003, 2015 and March 2025.
