Constitution of Bangladesh

The Constitution of Bangladesh was adopted on 4 November 1972, less than a year after the country won its independence from Pakistan in the 1971 war of liberation, and it established Bangladesh as a democratic republic founded on four original state principles: nationalism, socialism, democracy and secularism. The document created a unicameral parliament, the Jatiya Sangsad, and a parliamentary system of government headed by a prime minister. Its founding principles have been altered repeatedly by subsequent amendment, including periods in which secularism was formally removed and later restored, most notably reinstated by a 2011 amendment, and the constitution continues to be amended as Bangladesh's political life has evolved, while remaining in continuous force since 1972 as the country's founding legal charter.
