The Provisional Constitution of 1950, known in Indonesian as the Undang-Undang Dasar Sementara Republik Indonesia 1950, replaced the Federal Constitution of 1949 when Indonesia unilaterally withdrew from its union with the Netherlands and returned to being a unitary state. It came into force on 15 August 1950 and comprised 146 articles across six main sections covering the structure of the state, the instruments of government, regional administration and a planned constitutional assembly. It established a unicameral parliamentary system with a cabinet and prime minister responsible to parliament, and it devoted twenty-eight articles to fundamental rights and freedoms, covering equality before the law, freedom of movement, a ban on all forms of slavery, freedom of religion and freedom of opinion and expression. The constitution was abrogated on 5 July 1959, when President Sukarno issued a decree dissolving the elected Constitutional Assembly that had been tasked with drafting a permanent charter and restoring the 1945 Constitution of Indonesia in its place.
