Constitution of Gabon

Gabon's current constitution was approved by referendum on 16 November 2024, with about 92 percent of participating voters in favor on a turnout of roughly 54 percent; the Constitutional Court validated the result on 29 November 2024 and the president promulgated the document on 19 December 2024, establishing Gabon's Second Republic. It followed the August 2023 military coup that ended the Bongo family's decades-long rule. The 173-article constitution eliminates the office of prime minister in favor of a purely presidential system, replacing it with a Vice President of the Government role, sets the presidential term at two consecutive seven-year terms chosen through two-round elections, requires candidates to be born Gabonese to at least one Gabonese parent and to renounce any dual citizenship within three years of candidacy, defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman as an entrenched clause, demotes French from official to working-language status, and grants amnesty to participants in the 2023 coup.
