Constitution of Lesotho

The Constitution of Lesotho was adopted in 1993 to distribute power among three branches of government while preserving the authority of the monarchy, and it has been amended five times since. It establishes a constitutional monarchy in which the king is head of state bound by constitutional limits, and a parliament made up of the king, a Senate, and a National Assembly elected through a mixed member proportional system. Its bill of rights, set out in chapter two, guarantees the right to life, personal liberty and equality before the law along with freedom from discrimination, arbitrary detention and slavery, across fifteen chapters, 166 sections and three schedules.
