Constitution of Benin

Benin's current constitution was adopted by referendum in 1990, following the National Conference held in Cotonou in February of that year that ended one party rule and began the country's transition to multi party democracy. It establishes a presidential system in which the president is both head of state and head of government, serving up to two five year terms, alongside a National Assembly as the legislature. The document runs to a preamble and twelve titles across 160 articles, creates a Constitutional Court and a Supreme Court, and sets out protections for human rights and public liberties, with its preamble committing Benin to being a state governed by law and pluralistic democracy.
