Constitution of Algeria

Algeria's current constitution was adopted by national referendum in 2020, the latest in a lineage beginning with the 1963 constitution approved after the Algerian War of Independence, which had declared Algeria a one-party state under the National Liberation Front. A 1989 constitution approved by referendum with about 73 percent support ended the FLN's political monopoly and introduced multiparty democracy after the October 1988 riots, and the 1996 constitution that followed added restrictions barring political parties founded on a religious, linguistic, racial, sex, corporatist or regional basis. The 2020 revision, approved on low referendum turnout, introduced presidential term limits and expanded parliamentary and judicial powers.
