Constitution of South Sudan

The Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan, 2011 is the fundamental law of South Sudan. Drafted by a Southern Sudan Constitutional Drafting Committee and published in April 2011 after a technical review process that began on January 21, 2011, it was ratified on July 7, 2011 and came into force on July 9, 2011, South Sudan's independence day. It replaced the 2005 Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan and adapted that document's regional governance structures to fit a newly sovereign nation-state. The constitution establishes a presidential system of government in which the president serves as head of state, head of government and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
