The Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe was approved on 5 November 1975, establishing the country's founding legal framework at independence from Portugal. It has been amended four times, in 1980, 1987, 1990 and 2002, with the 1990 revision moving the country from a one-party Marxist-Leninist state to multi-party democracy. The constitution establishes a semi-presidential system with an executive branch led by a president and prime minister, a unicameral National Assembly as the legislature, and a Supreme Court of Justice as the highest judicial body.
