Constitution of Lebanon

The Lebanese constitution was adopted on 23 May 1926 by the Representative Council during the French Mandate, drawing heavily on the French Third Republic's model and instituting a confessional system that allocates political power by religious affiliation, including an originally equal division of the Chamber of Deputies' seats between Christians and Muslims. It established a president as ceremonial head of state, a prime minister as head of government and a Council of Ministers, alongside a judiciary of civil and religious courts, and its balance of power was later reshaped by the 1943 National Pact and the 1989 Taif Agreement that ended Lebanon's civil war.
