Constitution of Ivory Coast

The Constitution of Ivory Coast was approved by referendum on 30 October 2016, with about 93 percent of votes in favor, and formally adopted on 8 November 2016, becoming the country's third constitution since independence after documents from 1960 and 2000. President Alassane Ouattara had campaigned for the revision during his 2015 re-election bid, arguing the 2000 constitution bore some responsibility for the civil conflict that followed its adoption. The 2016 text establishes a presidential system in which a president and vice president run on a joint ticket, and it creates a bicameral parliament by adding a Senate alongside the existing National Assembly.
