Constitution of Cape Verde

Cape Verde's constitution, adopted in 1980, has been amended seven times, most significantly in 1992 when the country entrenched political pluralism and a multi party balance of powers after the end of one party rule, and again in 1999 when it was redefined as a sovereign, unitary and democratic republic guaranteeing respect for human dignity and the inviolability of human rights. It establishes three branches of government: an executive of president and prime minister, a legislative National Assembly, and a judiciary headed by a Supreme Court of Justice.
