Constitution of Syria

Syria adopted a Constitutional Declaration on 13 March 2025 under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, following the fall of the Assad government on 8 December 2024, replacing the 2012 constitution that had formally ceased to apply on 29 January 2025. The declaration establishes a presidential system with no prime minister, a unicameral People's Assembly serving as an interim legislature, and Islamic jurisprudence as the main source of law while stating that freedoms of opinion and expression are preserved; it is framed as a temporary five-year transitional framework pending a permanent constitution, and a Supreme Constitutional Court was established on 11 July 2026.
