Constitution of Iraq

The Constitution of the Republic of Iraq is the fundamental law of Iraq. Its first constitution came into force in 1925, and the current constitution was adopted on 18 September 2005 by the Transitional National Assembly of Iraq and confirmed by a constitutional referendum held on 15 October 2005, coming into force on publication in the Official Gazette of Iraq on 28 December 2005 in its original Arabic, with an official English translation produced jointly by Iraqi state authorities and the United Nations' Office for Constitutional Support. Since 2006 several proposals for constitutional amendment have been initiated, and the Kurdish language holds official status at the state level.
