Constitution of Tanzania

The Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, known as the Permanent Constitution, was ratified on 16 March 1977, replacing the 1964 Interim Constitution of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and following the earlier Independence Constitution of 1961 and Republican Constitution of 1962. It establishes a unitary presidential republic with a unicameral National Assembly and a dual government structure in which a largely autonomous Zanzibar government sits alongside the Union government, and it originally entrenched a one-party state before the 1992 Eighth Amendment permitted multiparty politics and the 2000 Thirteenth Amendment lowered the threshold for winning the presidency from an absolute majority to a simple majority.
