Constitution of Egypt

Egypt's current constitution was presented in January 2014, ratified by referendum on 14-15 January of that year and took effect on 18 January 2014, replacing the constitution that had been adopted in 2012 under President Mohamed Morsi, following the Egyptian military's removal of Morsi from office in July 2013. As originally adopted it establishes a system with a president, limited to a six-year term serving once, and a parliament holding the power to impeach the president. It designates Islam as the religion of the state while guaranteeing freedom of belief for the Abrahamic faiths and formal equality between men and women, and it bars the formation of political parties organized on the basis of religion, race, gender or geography. A further referendum on constitutional amendments was held in April 2019.
