The Civil Code of Paraguay dates from 1877 and reflects the influence of Continental Law. Like other Latin American codes it is inspired by the Code Napoleon. Its first version, in force until 1987, was almost a copy of the Civil Code of Argentina, and the legacy of the Argentine lawyer Dalmacio Velez Sarsfield, who drafted that model, is still revered among Latin American jurists. The entry therefore shows how a French-derived civil law tradition travelled through Argentina into Paraguayan private law.
