Andrei Mocioni de Foen lived from June 27, 1812 to April or May 1880 and was an Austrian and Hungarian jurist, politician, and informal leader of the ethnic Romanian community, and one of the founding members of the Romanian Academy. Of mixed Aromanian and Albanian background and raised Greek Orthodox, he belonged to the Mocioni family, elevated to Hungarian nobility, and was raised at the family estate at Foeni in the Banat, where he identified as Romanian from at least the 1830s. He rose to prominence during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 as a supporter of the House of Lorraine seeking increased autonomy for Banat Romanians, and the Austrians appointed him to an executive position over the region before including the Banat within the Voivodeship of Serbia. He was co-opted into the Imperial Diet in the 1860s, organized the 1860 National Assembly in the Banat seeking ethnic autonomy, served one full term in the Diet of Hungary, and helped Andrei Saguna reestablish an independent Transylvanian Metropolis for Romanian Orthodox Christians. He also co-founded the newspaper Albina of Vienna with his brothers and his lawyer Vincentiu Babes.
