Carey Estes Kefauver lived from 1903 to 1963 and was an American politician from Tennessee who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1939 to 1949 and in the United States Senate from 1949 until his death in 1963. A member of the Democratic Party, he won most of the 1952 Democratic presidential primaries though he was not nominated at the convention, and after leading a widely publicized investigation into organized crime in the early 1950s he sought his partys presidential nomination twice more, being selected in 1956 as the running mate of nominee Adlai Stevenson. He was named chairman of the Senate Antitrust and Monopoly Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1957 and served in that role until his death.
