Richard Green Lugar lived from April 4, 1932 to April 28, 2019 and was an American politician who served as a United States senator from Indiana from 1977 to 2013 as a member of the Republican Party. Before the Senate he served two terms as mayor of Indianapolis from 1968 to 1976. In the Senate he chaired the Committee on Foreign Relations and twice chaired the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Much of his work in the Senate went toward dismantling nuclear, biological and chemical weapons around the world, and he co-sponsored his most notable piece of legislation with Georgia Democrat Sam Nunn, the Nunn-Lugar Act.
