Motilal Chimanlal Setalvad was an Indian jurist, born around 1884 and dying in 1974, who served as independent India's first and longest-serving Attorney General, holding the post from 1950 to 1963 under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He chaired the first Law Commission of India from 1955 to 1958 and became the first chairman of the Bar Council of India in 1961, appearing in major matters including the Radcliffe Tribunal on the India-Pakistan border and United Nations proceedings on Kashmir. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, in 1957.
