Daniel Patrick Moynihan lived from March 16, 1927 to March 26, 2003 and was an American politician, diplomat and social scientist. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented New York in the United States Senate from 1977 to 2001, after serving as an adviser to President Richard Nixon and as United States ambassador to India and to the United Nations. He served as Assistant Secretary of Labor under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, publishing the Moynihan Report on Black poverty in 1965, and later chaired the Senate Environment Committee and the Senate Finance Committee. He led the Moynihan Secrecy Commission, which studied the regulation of classified information, and was tied with Jacob Javits as the longest-serving senator from New York until both were surpassed by Chuck Schumer in 2023.
