Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar lived from 1891 to 1956 and was an Indian jurist, economist and social reformer who chaired the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly of India and is regarded as the principal architect of the Constitution of India, adopted in 1949. Born into a family classified as untouchable under the caste system, he trained in law at Columbia University and the London School of Economics before returning to India to campaign against caste discrimination, and he served as independent India's first Law Minister. His constitutional drafting embedded fundamental rights, universal suffrage and affirmative-action provisions into India's founding legal document.
