Henri-Elzear Taschereau

Henri-Elzear Taschereau was a Canadian jurist born October 7, 1836 in Sainte-Marie-de-la-Nouvelle-Beauce, Lower Canada, admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1857 and later a judge of the Quebec Superior Court and part-time law lecturer at the University of Ottawa. He was appointed a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1878 by Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie and was elevated to Chief Justice of Canada in 1902, becoming the first Quebec justice to hold that position, before resigning in 1906 after his appointment to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. He was knighted in 1902 and died April 14, 1911 in Ottawa.
