Sir William Buell Richards was a Canadian lawyer, politician and judge who served as the first Chief Justice of Canada, leading the newly established Supreme Court of Canada from 1875 to 1879 after being appointed by Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie. Born on 2 May 1815, he had earlier sat in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada, served as Attorney General for Canada West, and led the Court of Common Pleas of Canada West and the Court of Queen's Bench of Ontario. He died on 26 January 1889.
