Ivan Cleveland Rand was a Canadian lawyer and politician born April 27, 1884 in Moncton, New Brunswick, who served as Attorney General of New Brunswick before his appointment as a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1943 by Prime Minister Mackenzie King, serving until his mandatory retirement in 1959. He is remembered for his 1946 labour arbitration ruling establishing the Rand formula, requiring all employees in a unionized workplace to pay union dues regardless of membership, and for his landmark civil liberties judgment in Roncarelli v Duplessis. He died January 2, 1969 in London, Ontario.
