George Edwin King was a Canadian lawyer and politician born October 8, 1839 in Saint John, New Brunswick, who served as the second and fourth Premier of New Brunswick, becoming the youngest person to hold that office, and whose government enacted the Common Schools Act of 1871 establishing a tax-supported public school system, which he defended before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Appointed by Prime Minister John Sparrow David Thompson, he served as a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1893 until his death on May 7, 1901.
