Edmund Leslie Newcombe (1859-1931) was a Canadian lawyer, civil servant and Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada who served as Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General for thirty-one years beginning in 1893, responsible for all the legal work of the government of Canada and appearing in more than thirty cases before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. At age 65, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King appointed him to the Supreme Court on September 16, 1924, to fill the vacancy left by Chief Justice Louis Henry Davies; King considered but rejected him as a Chief Justice candidate because of his Conservative Party ties. Newcombe served on the court until his death in December 1931, weeks after his wife's death and following a stroke.
