William Johnstone Ritchie was a Canadian judge born October 28, 1813 in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, and called to the Nova Scotia bar in 1837 before practicing in New Brunswick and serving in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. He was appointed a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1875 by Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie and was elevated to Chief Justice of Canada in 1879 by Prime Minister John A. Macdonald, a position he held until his death on September 25, 1892, the second-longest tenure as Chief Justice in the court's history after Beverley McLachlin.
