Ernst Benda was a German legal scholar, politician, and judge who served as the fourth President of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany from 1971 to 1983. Before joining the court he sat in the Bundestag from 1957 to 1971 and served as Federal Minister of the Interior from 1968 to 1969, and in 1965 he played a significant role in the debate over extending West Germany's statute of limitations for the murder charges against former Nazi officials. Earlier still, he helped found the Kampfgruppe gegen Unmenschlichkeit, an anti-communist organization that operated in East Germany, and after leaving the bench he held a law professorship at the University of Freiburg.
