Thomas Finlay (1922-2017) was an Irish judge, politician and barrister who served as Chief Justice of Ireland from 1985 to 1994, having previously been President of the High Court from 1974 and a High Court judge from 1971. Called to the bar in 1944 and made senior counsel in 1961, he was elected to the Irish parliament for Fine Gael in Dublin South-Central from 1954 to 1957 and defended Captain James Kelly in the 1970 arms trial. As Chief Justice he presided over the 1992 X Case, overturning an injunction that had prevented a pregnant rape victim from travelling abroad for an abortion, and after retiring he chaired inquiries into the Blood Transfusion Service Board scandal, the newspaper industry and the Lansdowne Road riot.
