William FitzGerald

William FitzGerald (1906-1974) was an Irish judge who served as Chief Justice of Ireland from 1973 until his sudden death the following year, having been a Supreme Court judge since 1966. Born in Cork, he trained at Belvedere College and King's Inns, was admitted to the bar in 1927 and took silk in 1944, before the Government of Ireland appointed him directly to the Supreme Court in 1966 and President Eamon de Valera elevated him to Chief Justice on the retirement of Cearbhall O Dalaigh. He died on 17 October 1974, at age 68, and was succeeded as Chief Justice by Tom O'Higgins.
