Georges Vedel was a French professor of public law, born in Auch in 1910 and dying in 2002. Credited with reshaping the discipline of public law in France through a theory uniting constitutional and regulatory law, he served as a member of France's Constitutional Council from 1980 to 1989 after being appointed by President Valery Giscard d'Estaing. He was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1998 and was known as a strong advocate for European federalism.
