Hugh Kennedy

Hugh Kennedy (1879-1936) was an Irish judge, politician and barrister who served as the first Chief Justice of the Irish Free State from 1924 until his death in 1936. He had earlier served as Attorney General of Ireland from 1922 to 1924 and briefly as a Teachta Dala for Dublin South in 1923 and 1924. He was a member of the Irish Free State Constitution Commission and helped draft the Constitution of the Irish Free State, and during the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations of 1920 and 1921 he acted as senior legal adviser to the Dail Eireann delegation. Born in Dublin in 1879 and called to the bar in 1902, he became King's Counsel in 1920 and, at 44, the youngest person appointed Chief Justice of Ireland; he campaigned unsuccessfully to abolish judicial wigs and gowns as remnants of colonial rule, and died in Dublin in 1936.
