Timothy Sullivan

Modern Constitutional and Supreme Court Judges of Europe

Timothy Sullivan (1874-1949) was an Irish jurist who served as Chief Justice of Ireland from 1936 to 1946, having previously been President of the High Court from 1924. Born in Dublin to a prominent political family, the son of Home Rule MP and Lord Mayor Timothy Daniel Sullivan, he trained at Belvedere College and King's Inns and was called to the bar in 1895. His most significant judicial act was a 1940 Supreme Court decision upholding legislation permitting indefinite detention of suspected IRA members, delivered as a judgment for the majority that proved controversial and prompted a constitutional amendment requiring single judgments in such cases; historians have found no evidence for later accusations that he packed the court.
