Palanisamy Sathasivam, born in 1949 in Tamil Nadu, served as the fortieth Chief Justice of India from July 2013 to April 2014. He enrolled as an advocate in 1973 and served on the Madras High Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court before joining the Supreme Court in 2007. As Chief Justice he authored three hundred thirty eight judicial opinions, including rulings in the Reliance Gas case, the Jessica Lal murder case and the 1993 Mumbai blasts sentencing, and he headed a panel that commuted fifteen death sentences in January 2014. After retiring he became Governor of Kerala from 2014 to 2019, the first former Chief Justice of India to become a state governor.
