Aloma Mariam Mukhtar was a Nigerian jurist who served as the thirteenth Chief Justice of Nigeria from July 2012 to November 2014, the first woman to hold the office. Her earlier career carried a string of firsts for women in Nigerian law: the first female lawyer from Northern Nigeria, the first female judge of the High Court in Kano State, and the first female justice of both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Nigeria. She was called to the English Bar in 1966 and to the Nigerian Bar in 1967, and on her inauguration as Chief Justice she was made a Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, having already received the lower Commander grade of the same honor in 2006.
