Tahani al-Gebali, who lived from November 20, 1950, to January 9, 2022, was an Egyptian judge who became the first woman to hold a judicial position in Egypt when President Hosni Mubarak appointed her to the Supreme Constitutional Court in 2003, a role in which she rose to Vice President of the court. Born in Tanta, she remained the only woman on Egypt bench for four years until thirty two additional women were appointed to the Egyptian judiciary in 2007, and her 2003 appointment is regarded as a watershed for women inclusion in the country legal system. She died of COVID-19 in January 2022 at the age of seventy one.
