Ancient Greek law

Ancient Greek law refers to the laws and legal institutions of ancient Greece. Greek city states practiced settling disputes, both between states and between members of a single state, through external arbitration, showing that foundational legal principles existed across the Greek world. Common legal themes recurred across different regions, particularly in the law of inheritance and adoption, the law of commerce and contract, and the public recording of legal agreements. Scholars trace the evolution of Greek law through sources such as the Gortyn code and later through documents preserved in Egyptian papyri, and comparative law scholarship has studied Greek legal traditions alongside Roman law and Germanic legal institutions.
