Dusan's Code is a fourteenth-century Serbian legal compilation enacted by Emperor Stefan Dusan in 1349, drawing on Roman law, Byzantine law, and customary and canon law. Promulgated at a state council in Skopje and expanded with supplementary articles added at Serres between 1353 and 1354, the finished code comprised 201 articles covering public law, legal procedure, punishments, church authority, and the rights and obligations of different social classes. It served as an early constitution for the Serbian Empire and its successor the Serbian Despotate, and continued to guide civil cases among Serbian communities even after the fall of the Despotate to Ottoman rule.
