The Fatawa 'Alamgiri, also called Al-Fatawa al-Hindiyyah, is a major compilation of Hanafi Islamic law commissioned by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and completed in 1672 by roughly 500 scholars drawn from South Asia, Iraq, and the Hejaz under the chairmanship of Sheikh Nizam of Lahore. Grounded in Quranic verses and hadith, it addressed statecraft, ethics, military strategy, economic policy, and justice and punishment, and functioned as the law and principal regulating body of the Mughal Empire. It went on to shape the administration of Islamic law across colonial South Asia from the eighteenth into the early twentieth century and has been described by scholars as the greatest digest of Muslim law of the Mughal era.
