The Yoro Code is a legal code of classical Japan compiled in 718 during the Nara period but not promulgated until 757, under the regency of Fujiwara no Nakamaro. Modeled on Tang dynasty Chinese codes of 651, it combined penal provisions, known as ritsu, with civil and administrative provisions, known as ryo. Its civil sections survive nearly complete, while the penal sections were largely lost and have had to be reconstructed from surviving fragments and from the Tang codes that inspired them.
