Cain Adomnain

Cain Adomnain, also known as the Lex Innocentium or Law of the Innocents, was a legal code promulgated in 697 CE at the Synod of Birr by Adomnan of Iona, the ninth Abbot of Iona, before an assembly of Gaelic and Pictish notables. It extended earlier protections for monks to cover noncombatants generally, particularly women, children and clergy, during warfare across Ireland and Pictish Scotland, and is often described as an early human rights instrument for its attempt to regulate the conduct of war within the Christian world.
