Undang-Undang Laut Melaka

Undang-Undang Laut Melaka was a legal code of the Melaka Sultanate, which lasted from 1400 to 1511, dealing specifically with maritime law and the nautical procedures of seafaring merchant vessels. It was composed by a group of Melakan shipowners, most of Javanese origin. Its clauses covered a wide range of shipboard circumstances, from social matters such as slavery, adultery, murder, theft and disrespecting an officer, to economic matters such as tax, trade and the measurement of weight and area, and it laid out a well structured shipboard organization with the titles and responsibilities of officers clearly specified. Enforcement of the code in the Melaka court fell under the authority of the Laksamana.
