Law Code of Vinodol

The Law Code of Vinodol is one of the oldest surviving law texts in the Chakavian dialect of Croatian and one of the oldest Slavic legal codes, compiled in 1288 by a 42 member commission in Novi Vinodolski on the Croatian coast and written in the Glagolitic alphabet. It records an agreement between the inhabitants of the Vinodol region and their rulers, the Frangipani counts of Krk, setting out feudal obligations that had replaced earlier tribal custom. The code also preserves what are considered the oldest public health regulations in western Croatia, and its original 16th century copy is held today at the National and University Library in Zagreb.
